Massachusetts Man Receives Grant to Start Snowshoeing Program for People with MS
January 23, 2001 Lewis Scotton of Hingham, MA will run a workshop for local residents who would like to learn how to snow shoe a popular winter sport that has distinct benefits for people with MS. He plans to take a group of four people on a 2-day trip to Lincoln Woods, N.H., near Mt. Washington in February or March of 2002 where they will experience the joy and benefits of snowshoeing.
An avid snowshoer since the 1970s, Lewis says the advantages of this sport for people with MS are multiple. Snowshoeing is an excellent conditioning sport, and it allows people to experience the wonderful season of winter in a safe and controlled manner. Snowshoes and poles provide additional support that is especially beneficial for those who have difficulty with balance. And for many people with MS, cold weather is generally easier to tolerate than warmer temperatures.
