Amelia Davis
San Francisco, CA

Amelia Davis, a professional photographer from San Francisco, CA, was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis (MS) 6 years ago – when she was 29 years old. Her diagnosis came just one month before her mother, a breast cancer survivor, died from complications with her diabetes.

Ms. Davis turned her grief into advocacy by working on a book of photographs of breast cancer survivors. The book, The First Look, featured black and white portraits of the women, as well as their written portrayal of how their lives were affected by their cancer. Ms. Davis’ latest project is a book of photographs of people who have MS. Amelia received a Betaseron® Champions of Courage grant to help her complete the photographic book, called My Story. She photographed a diverse group of people and their families. Accompanying each photograph is a statement written by the person with MS and one written by their family or caregiver expressing their feelings and experiences in dealing with MS. The book was completed in 2004.

Update: Congratulations, Amelia! My Story, entered its second printing in August 2004.
